Washington DC Lobby Team


We are seeking candidates from A.B.A.T.E of Illinois to join us for the 2017 A.B.A.T.E. of IL Washington, DC lobbying trip from April XX-XX.

As a member of the Lobbying Team, you will lobby our Congressional representatives on issues important to our organization and its members. You do not need to be a professional lobbyist to attend. We are looking for individuals who have a strong belief in our mission and who have knowledge of our current issues.

A.B.A.T.E. of Illinois covers expenses related for airfare and lodging but not including incidentals. If the State budget allows, volunteers are also given a small allowance for meals and ground transportation. We encourage the member’s Chapter and Chapters within the District to consider sending additional funds for their representatives to help offset some of the costs.

A.B.A.T.E of Illinois is seeking a diverse group of members who:

  • Demonstrate a strong interest in lobbying for motorcycle rights
  • Possess excellent leadership and teamwork skills
  • Possess excellent communication skills and are comfortable with speaking with someone you may are may not know
  • Physically walk for up to 5 miles or more per day
  • Are actively involved at their Chapter level - attends meetings and events
  • Current on membership dues
  • Actively lobbied during Legislative Day or in Washington in the past
  • Will commit to being available for the full week of the trip

WHO DECIDES WHO WILL BE ATTENDING?

Bob Myers, Legislative Coordinator, and his committee will be responsible for choosing the attendees. Selections should be made no later than Monday, February 15. Attendees will be notified as soon as possible.

FAQ’s

 

What are the dates for the trip?

We will depart on Sunday, April XX and return on Saturday, April XX.

Can I bring my spouse or significant other?

Our policy has been that you are not allowed to bring another person with you on the trip. However, if you would like to stay before or after the trip to enjoy the sites, please feel free to do so, but you will be responsible for the hotel and/or additional airfare expenses.

What hotel will we be staying at?

The hotel will be in the vicinity of areas we will be visiting. Cost will also play a factor in the location we select.

What are the room arrangements?

Rooms will be assigned two team members per room (male/male, female/female).

What do I wear during the trip?

We would like for you to wear your A.B.A.T.E clothing (shirts, vests). If you bring your vest, please no offensive patches like "Nazi, screw the Government, etc.). We do have many photo ops with our Congressman. Use your best judgment with your attire so it does not cause problems for our group.

Please wear clean slacks/jeans. Be sure to bring comfortable walking shoes.

What do I bring on the trip?

We recommend you bring your business cards, a briefcase or bag for carrying folders. Umbrella in case of rain.

I am unable to attend after being selected. What happens?

You may cancel your attendance at any time. However, if your airline ticket has already been purchased, you will be required to reimburse A.B.A.T.E. of Illinois for the full fare.

Consideration will be taken in the event of an emergency situation.

Will there be time for sightseeing?

Yes, we should have many opportunities for you to visit many sites.

Will I need personal money for this trip?

Yes, you will need personal funds for your incidentals, souvenirs, etc. Some Chapters or Districts have sent additional funds with their representative. However, this is not always the case so please plan accordingly.
