Riders Rights / Legislation
ABATE’s legislative program monitors and lobbies against legislation that would negatively effect motorcyclists’ rights and safety. In addition ABATE supports and seeks out sponsors for legislation that would benefit motorcycling.
Since our inception in 1987 we have defeated in the neighborhood of 40 attempts to pass a mandatory helmet law. (ABATE believes education not legislation is the key to motorcycle safety) In addition we have seen to the passage of laws that provide for and protect the Cycle Rider Safety Training Fund and the Recreational Trails of Illinois Act (provides funding for OHV trails.) We are currently involved in a lawsuit against the State of Illinois for what we believe to be the illegal raiding of the Cycle Rider Safety Training Fund.
These are just a few examples of the many issues we have addressed over the years, others include but are not limited to: health insurance discrimination, restricted access to public roads, and regulations that would severely restrict customization and the building of custom motorcycles. Please check out the links below for details on these and other motorcycle related issues.
ABATE of IL frequently partners with the Motorcycle Riders Foundation on issues of national concern.
